Sisterhood

Phi Mu Gamma Tau prides itself on our sisterhood. Our goal as a chapter is to create a bond while we are here that can last a lifetime. The relationships that develop during our time on campus shaped some of the best memories of our time here.

Our Vice President of Chapter Development and Sisterhood Development Chair work hard to plan fun and exciting events for sister and chapter bonding.

Bid Day: The beginning of our story of sisterhood starts with our new members receiving their Phi Mu bids, and then run to meet their sisters for the first time. Then the chapter celebrates the welcoming of a whole new pledge class of sisters with fun activities like dance parties, snacks, and hearing about some of the fun memories sisters have made. This gives the new pledges a chance to get to know the Gamma Tau sisterhood and what it means to be a member of it.

Sisterhood Retreat: Sisters take time out of their busy academic and extracurricular schedules to come together for games, bonding, team-building exercises, crafts, movies, and more! This is always a Gamma Tau favorite because it provides an opportunity to step back from everyone’s hectic lives and hang around with sisters.

Secret Week: One of the most exciting weeks of the year for Phi Mu, and the entire Johns Hopkins community. Bigs sneak around planting gifts and treats with little note clues for their Littles for the entire week leading up to Revelation. Phi Mu families work together to craft and design gifts for their future littlest, and make sure to include things they know are her favorite. It’s always fun to see everyone come together at Revelation and celebrate the welcoming of someone new to the Family.

Sisterhood Tailgates: Sister tailgates give sisters an opportunity to support the girls of Gamma Tau who are on sports teams. The tailgate is a fun time with music, snacks, and poster making for the girls on the field. It is always fun to see girls coming up with energetic chants to sing for our talented athletic sisters out on the court and .

Phi Mu Thanksgiving: Every year before Thanksgiving break, Gamma Tau organizes a Phi Mu Thanksgiving where sisters contribute dishes or desserts for a giant potluck dinner. Members bond in swapping recipes and cooking delicious meals together (we even cook our own turkey!). It is a chance for us to be thankful for the wonderful sisterhood we share in Phi Mu and is a classic Hopkins tradition. Our Phi Mu Thanksgiving ties in elements of our Ritual—our Recommitment Ceremony takes place after our great meal.

Founder’s Day: On March 4 our chapter and our alumnae gather in an on-campus location for a potluck dessert and open ceremony ritual. In the past we have hosted the Carnation Collection, so future bigs can purchase Phi Mu goods for their future littles, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Children’s Miracle Network.

Chapter Meetings: Our weekly chapter meetings are a great time for sisterhood development activities. Not only do we discuss important Phi Mu topics like Ritual, Academic Excellence, and the Phi Mu Foundation, but we also host informative guest speakers, like Theresa Jones, a JHU Professor of Entrepreneurship & Management, who taught us the “dos and don’ts” of budgeting independent financial endeavors for young women. We also discuss fun upcoming Gamma Tau events and have surprise guests like an all-male a cappella group, a local magician, and even the Maryland Zoo!
