Gamma Tau Chapter | The Johns Hopkins University

Sisterhood

Phi Mu Gamma Tau prides itself on our sisterhood. Without each other we would not be such a thriving and successful organization. The Gamma Tau sisterhood we share is what distinguishes us from other student groups on campus.

Our Vice President of Chapter Development and Sisterhood Development Chair work hard to plan fun and exciting events for sister and chapter bonding.

Bid Day: After new members receive their Phi Mu bids, the entire chapter gathers in on-campus buildings for icebreaker activities, crafting, cupcake decorating, snacking, and fun stories about Phi Mu experiences.

Sisterhood Retreat: A Gamma Tau favorite! Sisters take time out of their busy academic and extracurricular schedules to come together for games, bonding, team-building exercises, crafts, movies, dinner, and a sundae bar. Freshmen through Senior Phi Mu girls love our retreats—they have included the Tulip Garden and the Telephone Building rooftop, which provides amazing views of Hopkins and Baltimore.

Secret Week: One of the most exciting weeks of the year for Phi Mu, and the entire Johns Hopkins community. Bigs plan gift deliveries for their Littles for the entire week leading up to Revelation. Phi Mu families work together to craft and design gifts for their future littlest, and love writing surprise clues to their newest family member. It’s always fun to see a delivery of Phi Mu shirts and home-baked goods to an unsuspecting little!

Levering Lunch: Every Wednesday at JHU is letter day! Phi Mus, and members of the other three Panhellenic sororities, proudly wear their letters on campus. Our Sisterhood Development committee distributes candy to girls wearing Phi Mu gear! From 12:00-2:00 our chapter gathers at Levering Hall for “Levering Lunch”—a great PR opportunity for Gamma Tau, and a fun bonding meal with our sisters.

Phi Mu Thanksgiving: Every year before Thanksgiving break, Gamma Tau organizes a Phi Mu Thanksgiving where sisters contribute dishes or desserts for a giant potluck dinner. Members bond in swapping recipes and cooking delicious meals together (we even cook our own turkey!). It is a chance for us to be thankful for the wonderful sisterhood we share in Phi Mu and is a classic Hopkins tradition. Our Phi Mu Thanksgiving ties in elements of our Ritual—our Recommitment Ceremony takes place after our great meal.

Founder’s Day: On March 4 our chapter and our alumnae gather in an on-campus location for a potluck dessert and open ceremony ritual. In the past we have hosted the Carnation Collection, so future bigs can purchase Phi Mu goods for their future littles, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Children’s Miracle Network.

Chapter Meetings: Our weekly chapter meetings are a great time for sisterhood development activities. Not only do we discuss important Phi Mu topics like Ritual, Academic Excellence, and the Phi Mu Foundation, but we also host informative guest speakers, like Theresa Jones, a JHU Professor of Entrepreneurship & Management, who taught us the “dos and don’ts” of budgeting independent financial endeavors for young women. We also discuss fun upcoming Gamma Tau events and have surprise guests like an all-male a cappella group, a local magician, and even the Maryland Zoo!
